Manchester United’s Recent Premier League History

Manchester United is the team who has won the league title the most times – 20, one more than their greatest rivals, Liverpool. 13 of those titles came in the Premier League era (since 1992) and all of them came under the leadership of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Sir Alex claimed the Premier League Manager of the Season award 12 times during his prolonged spell at Manchester.

  • The last Premier League title they have claimed came in the 2012/13 season and they are the only team to have won the title 3 consecutive times (and manage the feat twice!).

Since the heydays under Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United initially struggled to find the required consistency to even challenge other teams such as Manchester City and Chelsea to win the Premier League again.

After 27 years of stability they changed their manager 3 times in 5 years. David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho all tried to steer the Red Devils back to success but they could only muster a second place finish with 19 points off the lead, at best.

Ole takes the wheel

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer then stepped in for the reds as a caretaker manager after the management sacked Jose Mourinho in December 2018 following one of the worst starts to a season for the club with just 7 wins out of 17 matches. Solskjaer managed to revive the fans’ hopes of ending the season within the top 4 however missed out after a poor run in the final 5 matches, failing to win in each one.

During the 2019/20 season, the club invested in valuable reinforcements to the team in centre back Harry Maguire, right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka over the summer and attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes during the January transfer window for a complexive total of more than R$170 million.

They managed to reduce the number of goals conceded and started scoring more, especially in front of the home fans at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes instantly became a reference point for the team as he scored 8 goals and became the top assistman for the team that season, despite joining halfway through the season.

In the 2020/21 season, Manchester United managed to finish the closest to the eventual Premier League champions since Sir Alex Ferguson left the team. However, ending 12 points behind the champions, Manchester City can hardly be called challenging for the title. Despite having brought in experienced striker Edinson Cavani and hard-working Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek, the team was still not scoring enough goals to get them past tough opponents.

All losses came in front of the home crowd or the lack of it, since most matches were played behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The team suffered 6 home losses, making it the second worst season in the past 15 seasons. However, on the other hand, Manchester United managed to gain the most points from away games compared to the past 15 seasons – 43 points – after not losing away a single time, something which was only ever achieved by Arsenal in the 2001/02 and 2003/04 seasons. In fact, they managed to set the Premier League record for the longest unbeaten away run. The string of 29 unbeaten away matches came to an end against Leicester City on Saturday 16th October 2021 when they lost 4-2 to the Foxes at the King Power Stadium.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Return to Old Trafford

Most recently they purchased one of the best football players to grace the game, Cristiano Ronaldo, from Italian giants Juventus. Despite his age, Cristiano has proved he can still play at the highest levels and produce moments of sheer brilliance. His addition to the team will hopefully bring along more goal scoring opportunities and has helped increase the fans’ hopes of making this the year they can finally make their way back to winning the Premier League.

Manchester United enjoys being the only Premier League side to have a positive or equal historic record against all the clubs currently in the top flight.

Surprisingly, the only club which Man Utd don’t have a positive record against are the newly promoted side Brentford – they have only met in 5 seasons and the record stands at 4 win for the Red Devils, 4 wins for Brentford and 2 draws – they are even draw on the goal difference from those matches.

As for the other teams, the stats speak for themselves. Historically speaking, the team which has given the reds the hardest time has been the team they’ve played against the most – Arsenal. They have played more than 200 matches against each other with Arsenal managing to get a win in 35% of those matches.

The team with the largest draw ratio in matches played against Man Utd are Leeds United with 34.7% of the Premier League matches ending in a draw.

The team against which Man Utd have the best record is Watford. The two teams have met 26 times and Man Utd have taken the 3 points 18 times (69.2%). Unsurprisingly, the team against which Man Utd have the worst win ratio is Liverpool with the Red Devils emerging victorious in 38.6% of the matches played.

Against city rivals Manchester City, Man Utd currently enjoy a comfortable historic advantage with the reds winning 65 and the blues winning 47. Interestingly, the all time goal difference between these two sits at 11 goals in United’s favour which makes it the smallest goal difference advantage Man Utd have when compared to all other clubs. Liverpool is second best with 12 while Aston Villa has the worst goal difference of all with 85 goals less than how many United have scored against them.

Bringing in Cristiano Ronaldo (dubbed as Mr Champions League) has given Manchester United a boost in the likelihood of them winning the Champions League this year. The same had happened with Juventus when the superstar first joined but 3 years later, Juventus are still without a recent Champions League trophy.

Football is a team sport and despite the fact that having great players on your side surely helps, it’s the team collective that wins you trophies. No player can win games alone and we’ve seen that time and time again with players such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo leading a team which is just not equipped, prepared, willing or lucky enough to end up winning trophies, especially prestigious ones.

Considering the rest of the team, with creative players such as Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes, experienced players like Raphael Varane, Edinson Cavani and Juan Mata who all have experience in winning huge trophies such as the FIFA World Cup, European Championships or even Champions Leagues themselves – Manchester United may have what it takes to get themselves to the final stages of the competition.

They can also bank on the flair and pace of players like Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood, provided they remain injury-free. All in all, they seem to have a complete package with great options coming off the bench too. Solskjaer has got loads of talent at his disposal but managing that kind of talent is never a piece of cake.

Manchester United Champions League History & Stats

Since the start of the Champions League, or European Cup as it was initially known, in the 1955/56 season, Manchester United have participated in 29 editions. They are also the second best English team in the competition after Liverpool as they made it to the final 5 times, winning it on 3 occasions.

They impressively made it to the quarter finals 66% of the times they competed. Most recently, since teams such as Chelsea, Tottenham and even Leicester City have managed to finish the Premier League season in the top 4 positions, Man Utd have missed out on three editions after failing to qualify in the 2014/15, 2016/17 and 2019/20.

Champions League Statistics (until end of 2020/21 Season)

  • Champions League Matches Played - 285 matches
  • UCL Matches Won by Man Utd - 157 (55%)
  • UCL Matches Drawn by Man Utd - 66 (23%)
  • UCL Matches Lost by Man Utd - 62 (22%)

The last time United won the title was in the 2007/08 season when they faced Chelsea in an all-English final. The match ended 1-1 and proceeded to a nail-biting penalty shootout which saw Cristiano Ronaldo and John Terry both fail a penalty. Eventually Nicolas Anelka saw his effort saved by Dutch goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar.

The club’s top goalscorers in the UCL have been Ruud Van Nistelrooy with 38 goals, Wayne Rooney with 34 goals and Ryan Giggs with 29 goals from a total of 96 different scorers who have worn the United shirt over the years.

Other Competitions Manchester United Compete In

Apart from the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, Manchester United also compete in the EFL Cup (also known as the Carabao Cup) and the FA Cup.

They have managed to win the FA Cup 12 times and have an average of 1.8 goals scored per match across all the 471 matches contested in this competition. They also have an impressive record of 2.07 goals on average in every home match played.

When it comes to the League Cup, the Reds have won it 5 times in total after reaching the final 9 times in all. They carried over the same scoring prowess from the FA Trophy and in fact have a 2.07 goal average for every home match playing in the League Cup. Their win ratio is 72% at home, 45% away and 58% overall.
