5 Reasons to Watch and Bet on The Serie A

  1. Top Talent – A number of players that drove Italy to their Euro 2020 success are key cogs in their respective Serie A sides, including Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini. There are also rising stars of the game such as Lautaro Martinez, Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic.
  2. Mourinho Magic – Jose Mourinho returned to Serie A as head coach of Roma. The Portuguese won Serie A twice in two years with Inter, along with the Champions League during his previous spell in Italy. Could he perform similar heroics with I Lupi?
  3. The rejuvenation of the Milan clubs. Inter halted Juventus’ dominance of Serie A by winning the crown for the first time in 11 years last season. Antonio Conte’s departure has rocked the club, but Simone Inzaghi is a solid hire to replace him. AC Milan are also back on the scene after placing second last term. Don’t count out the Rossoneri this season.
  4. The sheer amount of betting opportunities. As we’ve discussed throughout this article, Serie A is one of the best leagues to punt on. It offers drama, excitement, and a variety of compelling markets to try your hand on.
  5. It’s easy to live stream. Multiple bookmakers offer Serie A live streaming services, and in most cases, you won’t need to pay a fee.

Popular Serie A Betting Markets & Tips

Before and during the Serie A season, you will be able to place outright bets on a variety of markets. These wagers are placed on the outcome of an event over the course of the season rather than a single game.

You can pick and choose when to place an outright bet – whether it is at the start of the season, in the middle or even during the climax. However, you do have to consider when you will receive the optimum value on your odds.

You will have access to a diverse range of markets when placing a match bet on Serie games. You can place a wager on the following: full time result, correct score, first goalscorer, over 2.5 goals, cards and corners, among others. Bookmakers will provide you with the opportunity to cash out on match and outright bets, so it is always worth paying attention to your wager when it’s live.

Match Bets

Serie A has a host of outstanding contests on a weekly basis, providing great opportunities for match bets. However, there are games that stand out more than others, including the Milan Derby, when Inter and AC lock horns.

The Rome Derby between Roma and Lazio is always a tense affair, while any match between Juventus and the leading outfits always garners interest. This is when you will want to place a match bet. You will have the opportunity to bet on these markets; full time result, correct score, first goalscorer, over 2.5 goals, cards and corners, among others when wagering on a match.

In-Play Bets

Live betting is now an essential part of all wagering, giving bettors the ability to place a wager on a match in action, and thus allowing them to capitalise on events as they occur.

Bookmakers tailor their odds during games, which opens up new opportunities for betting on Serie A. For example, Tammy Abraham’s odds to score the first goal may be influenced by his performance on the day for Roma and the potential struggles of his opponent.

You will have access to all the markets you would receive on a normal match bet, including full time result, correct score, first goalscorer, over 2.5 goals, cards and corners.

Accumulator Bets

Accumulator bets are one of the most popular bets to place over the course of a round of matches. Serie A offers a lot over a weekend’s worth of action, allowing bettors to group single bets together to form an accumulator whether it be a double, treble or multiple.

Doing so increases the value of the bet overall. The wager is most commonly placed on the result, but it can include over/under markets among other Serie A betting options.

Bet Builder

Bookmakers are now offering bettors the opportunity to work on their own bet using bet builders for Serie A betting. You can assemble your own bet on a single game using all the markets at your disposal to increase the value of your wager.

Bet builders provide you with the use of Serie A betting markets such as the full time result, correct score, first goalscorer, over/unders, cards and corners.

Serie A Winner

In this wager, you place an outright bet on the winner of Serie A. Juventus have been the standout team for a number of years, but their dominant run of nine-straight titles was ended by Inter. However, the Nerazzurri have since lost their manager and a number of key players. Between Juve, Inter, AC Milan, Atalanta and Napoli, the league is wide open in the 2021/22 season.

Serie A Winner Without Juventus

The bookmakers have taken Juventus’ dominance of Serie A into account by offering a winner market without the Bianconeri.

Here you will have the chance to bet on a league winner from the other 19 teams in Serie A. The team that finishes with the most points outside of Juve is the winner.

Top Goal Scorer

One of the most popular betting markets outside of a team setting is the top goal scorer. Serie A is home to outstanding strikers, but this market should be blown wide open this term considering the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku during the summer. There is a great opportunity to pick a player with good value to win your bet.

Tips To Look Out for When Placing a Top Goal Scorer Bet:

  • Past form – This will help you become familiar with the players who have proven they have an eye for goal.
  • Who do they play for? Although this is an individual award, winners usually play for high-scoring teams because these teams naturally create more chances.
  • Do they take penalties? If so, this is a huge advantage in their favour. In the 2019/20 season, Lazio’s Ciro Immobile scored a whopping 41.7% of his Serie A goals from the spot.

These are the top contenders for the crown, but the likes of Inter’s signing Edin Dzeko and Roma new boy Tammy Abraham should not be overlooked if you’re interested in value.

To Finish Top Four in the Serie A

The top four teams at the end of each Serie A season qualify for the prestigious UEFA Champions League next season. This is widely regarded to be the most important title at club level. As you’d expect, this means the race for top four in Serie A is a fierce battle and a thrilling market to bet on.

Juventus, Inter, Atalanta and Napoli have all been on point here in recent history, but given the recent resurgence of clubs such as AC Milan along with Roma and Lazio, there is value to be found in this market. This term more than ever, the battle for the top four will be an intense affair.

To Be Relegated

At the end of each season, three teams face the ignominious fate of relegation from Serie A. The relegation battle usually makes for great drama, and not only will punting on this market give you an extra incentive to follow it, but there is also potential for great value. It’s important to note that many bookmakers will also offer you the option to bet on teams to avoid relegation.

The leading contenders this term for the drop are the sides that were promoted to Serie A last season. Empoli, Salernitana and Venezia are all the top candidates for the drop, but Torino, Cagliari, Spezia and Udinese cannot afford to get too comfortable given their struggles in the last campaign.

Tournament Structure for Serie A

The league consists of 20 teams who play each other twice, on a home and away basis, therefore playing a total of 38 matches over the course of a season. As is the case in other football leagues, teams are awarded 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and none for a loss. All accrued points are entered into a league table format and at the end of the season, the team with most points are crowned the champions.

Moreover, at the end of the year the top 4-ranked teams earn the right to participate in the UEFA Champions League. The teams finishing 5th and 6th, along with the winner of the Coppa Italia, qualify for the UEFA Europa League Tournament. In the case that the winner of the Coppa Italia also finishes in the top 4, the 7th-placed team will take part in the Europa League qualifiers.

On the other end of the spectrum, the three teams at the bottom of the table are automatically relegated to the Serie B – the second tier of Italian football. Three teams from Serie B are promoted to the Serie A to replace them.

Teams can buy and sell players during transfer windows, of which there are two throughout the year. One takes place during the summer months and the other mid-season, in January.

Games are usually held on Saturday and Sunday, with a limited amount of fixtures being contested on weekday evenings. A one-week winter break, during which no matches are played, will occur once a season.

History of the Serie A

The Serie A’s existence stretches as far back as 1898, although it was played as a regional competition at the time. In 1929 it was restructured, allowing teams from all over the country to take part. A total of 18 clubs participated in the competition that season, with Inter Milan (formerly known as Ambrosiana) winning the Scudetto (“small shield” in Italian).

For every ten titles won, a club is allowed to display a golden star above their club badge. Juventus, having won the league an astounding 36 times, currently have 3 stars, while Milan and Inter both have 1.

Serie A’s Top Players To Look Out For – 2021/22

Serie A has seen an exodus of talent in recent seasons with Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku moving back to the Premier League. However, there are still quality players applying their trade in Italy’s top division.

Lautaro Martinez

The 24-year-old is the heir apparent to Lionel Messi in the Argentina national squad, and has been outstanding for Inter since his move to the club in 2018. He was instrumental in their Scudetto triumph last season and will take on greater responsibility following the sale of Lukaku.

Martinez was himself a transfer target of Tottenham, but has remained loyal to the Nerazzurri and is expected to be one of the bright lights of the 2021/22 Serie A campaign.

Federico Chiesa

Chiesa is developing into a superstar for Juventus and Italy. He was a massive player in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph, scoring decisive goals in their wins over Austria and Spain in the competition.

Juventus will be asking more of the 23-year-old in the final third following the sale of Ronaldo. The sky is the limit for his potential and he has big shoes to fill as his father Enrico was a Serie A standout over a 20-year career.

Franck Kessie

Kessie is the foundation of Milan’s improvement in recent seasons. The Ivorian has been a dominant force in the middle of the park and is just scratching the surface of his potential.

He scored 13 goals in Serie A last season as he continues to develop into a potent player for the Rossoneri. Expect him to continue to catch the eye under Stefano Pioli.
