Premier League Betting – 2021/22 Match Previews

Our football experts have conducted extensive research and put together their predictions for the 2021/22 Premier League below.

Premier League 2021/22 – Predictions for the ‘Big Six’

Manchester City

Striker or strikerless, this Manchester City side are the Premier League’s best team. They dominated Chelsea in their recent 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge and their first-half performance in the 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield was remarkable. No side has ever been able to suffocate the Reds on home soil like that since Jurgen Klopp took charge.

When Pep Guardiola’s side turn it on, they’re unstoppable. End of.

However, while City have produced some incredible performances in the ‘big’ games at the start of the season, some issues are starting to manifest regarding consistency in attack. They’ve failed to score in four games already this season in all competitions. Still, they’ve scored 20 times in nine Premier League outings and sit third in the table with 20 points, two off leaders Chelsea.

Pep’s flawless structure facilitates a sound defence that are compact in defensive transition, a previous vulnerability of his City sides, while they’re becoming less reliant on Kevin De Bruyne from a creative perspective. The multi-faceted full-back Joao Cancelo, emerging superstar Phil Foden and summer arrival Jack Grealish have all taken the burden off the Belgian.

After starting last season slowly before blitzing their way to the Premier League title, they’ve begun the campaign sharply this time around. That’s an ominous sign for the fellow contenders, with City typically being a side that improves as the season progresses. They’ll only get better, and they’re the team to beat for this season’s crown.

Key Stats

• Manchester City have won three of the last four Premier League titles.
• Their 2017/18 team became the first in Premier League history to reach the 100-point mark in a single season.
• Kevin De Bruyne has registered 78 Premier League assists – the tenth most of all-time.

Chelsea

This is what Chelsea do. They win. After sacking club legend Frank Lampard in January 2021, the club brought in former Paris Saint-Germain boss Thomas Tuchel. The meticulous German introduced a near-impenetrable 3-4-3 and maximised the potential of a supremely talented Chelsea side.

Tuchel guided the Blues to a top-four finish in the Premier League before they lifted the Champions League in Porto following a 1-0 victory over Manchester City.

The summer transfer window saw Roman Abramovich splash the cash once more, as Inter Milan star Romelu Lukaku returned to Stamford Bridge following a near-decade absence. Upon his arrival, the brutish Belgian was regarded by many as the missing piece in a Chelsea Premier League title charge, but after a fast start, questions have arisen about Tuchel’s usage of the forward.

Nevertheless, Tuchel’s coaching capacity alone thrusts the Blues right into title contention. They’re top of the table after nine games, having lost just once (to Man City) but you feel they still have more gears to go through. Mason Mount’s return to form will be key. He’s the x-factor in this side. The Blues have so much talent at their disposal, with Tuchel getting the very best out of his back three and Edouard Mendy emerging as one of the world’s best goalkeepers.

They’re a brilliant side, one that could enjoy another deep European run, and they know how to win ugly – which is imperative in a title charge. They’ll run Man City incredibly close this season.

Key Stats

• Thomas Tuchel is looking to replicate Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Antonio Conte by winning the Premier League title with Chelsea in his first full season at the club.
• Chelsea have won five Premier League titles, with their last coming in 2017.
• The Blues have amassed 27 clean sheets in all competitions since Tuchel joined the club in January – the most by any side in Europe’s top five leagues in that time frame.

Liverpool

Following their woeful title defence last season, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are well and truly back (and fully fit). Buoyed by the world’s current best footballer, Mohamed Salah, the Reds thumped Manchester United 5-0 to continue their unbeaten start to the season in which they’ve already played Chelsea and Manchester City.

While Virgil van Dijk is yet to return to his imperious best after a lengthy spell out, Klopp’s Liverpool are a juggernaut. There are just so many ways they can beat teams. If their pressing doesn’t overwhelm you, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s delivery will. If Roberto Firmino fails to outwit you, Salah will blitz – or waltz – through you.

They’re firing on all cylinders at the start of the season, and they’ll be tough to stop if their stars stay fit. They did incredibly well to secure a top-four spot last season considering just how many key injuries they sustained. That’s a testament to Klopp and his system.

They’re certainly worth backing for the title but they’re only one or two injuries away from falling behind Chelsea and Manchester City, who both boast remarkably deep squads. A third-place finish could be calling.

Key Stats

• Liverpool have lifted the Premier League just once.
• The Reds set a joint record for most wins in a single Premier League season amid their title victory (32).
• Mo Salah became the fifth-quickest player to 100 Premier League goals earlier this season when he scored in his side’s 3-2 victory over Leeds United.

Manchester United

The short-term future of the Red Devils is incredibly hard to predict considering the managerial position of current incumbent Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Manchester United’s remarkable 5-0 defeat to arch-rivals Liverpool has all but made Solskjaer’s position untenable. He remains in charge for now, but his exit appears imminent with Antonio Conte widely touted to be his successor.

The Norwegian boss had done an admirable job rebuilding the Red Devils, one that was bolstered by the summer arrivals of Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s blockbuster return has halted United’s resurgence under Solskjaer. While the all-time great will score a hatful of goals, he brings about balancing and pressing issues.

Only recently were Ole’s United a side that starred on the big occasion, but they’ve swiftly evolved into a porous, unbalanced outfit with question marks remaining in midfield. They look poorly coached, but Solskjaer hasn’t been helped by tactical liabilities Ronaldo and Paul Pogba (when he plays in the midfield pivot). In the modern era, universality trumps individuality almost every time.

Barring a drastic turnaround, Solskjaer will be out the door soon with Conte surely coming in. United’s current squad isn’t built for a vintage Conte 3-5-2, but the demanding Italian boss will undoubtedly maximise the potential of this Red Devils side should he come in.

No matter who’s at the helm, though, this United side are levels below the Premier League’s elite trio. Fourth spot is their ceiling, but West Ham and Leicester City are better coached, more balanced sides.

Key Stats

• Manchester United have won the most Premier League titles (13). All of these came while Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge.
• United haven’t won the title since 2013, finishing second on two occasions (2017/18 & 2020/21).
• Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 87 goals in 203 Premier League appearances. He did win the Golden Boot with 31 goals during the 2007/08 campaign.

Arsenal

Following a dismal start to the season, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have recovered somewhat but they still sit tenth in the Premier League table. While Arteta finally has a starting XI that can fulfil his desires from a tactical and technical perspective, inconsistency continues to plague the Gunners.

They produced a scintillating opening 30 minutes in the North London derby before ceding too much control to a vulnerable Tottenham side (they still won 3-1, mind), while their home victory over Aston Villa was one of the most complete performances of the Arteta era thus far. But that came just a few days after a dismal showing against Crystal Palace, in which they needed a last-gasp Alexandre Lacazette strike to earn them a point.

Despite their inconsistency, it’s distinct that this Arsenal side are trending in the right direction under Arteta. While the Spaniard has his faults, the job he’s done has been pretty impressive. He’s galvanised a young Gunners.

However, they’re still a season or two away from competing for a Champions League spot. While their strongest starting XI is good, Arteta still has too much deadwood in reserve. A couple more transfer windows are required. Nevertheless, they should be good enough for a top six finish this time around.

Key Stats

• Arsenal are the only side to have gone a whole Premier League season unbeaten (2003/04).
• That league title triumph was the Gunners’ most recent.
• The Gunners have missed out on Champions League football for the last five seasons. They last finished in the top four in the 2015/16 campaign – when Arsene Wenger was still in charge.

Tottenham Hotspur

Oh, Spurs. After relieving Jose Mourinho – you know, the bloke well-known for winning trophies – in the build-up to last season’s Carabao Cup final, the Lilywhites have only gone and hired a bearded, less charismatic iteration of the ‘Special One’.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s football is turgid, and a Spurs side boasting this sort of attacking talent should not be producing such lifeless performances with the ball. There are a few issues from a coaching perspective: the build-up is atrocious (it has been since Mauricio Pochettino departed), they lack a ball-progressor when Tanguy Ndombele is functioning as a number ten and their pressing often leaves plenty to be desired.

They’re so static in possession and are a side completely bereft of any fluidity or cohesion.

However, while Nuno does feel like a stop-gap option for a season or two, it’s still early into his reign and there is time for improvement. Defensively, they appear more resilient, with the addition of Cristian Romero from Atalanta a brilliant one, while Oliver Skipp has the potential to be an underrated Premier League star in midfield.

Going forward, they need more from Harry Kane. While the superstar England forward has endured several blips in his career, this one feels a little different with his failed move to Manchester City still fresh in the minds of Spurs supporters. If Kane can begin to fire on all cylinders with partner in crime Heung-min Son, they might be in for a decent year. But, as it stands, it looks like it’ll be a struggle for Europe.

Key Stats

• Tottenham’s last league title came way back in 1961.
• They haven’t won a trophy since the Carling Cup in 2008.
• Harry Kane has scored the seventh-most Premier League goals of all-time (167) and has the most among all current players.

Premier League Betting Stats

One thing that the best providers of Premier League betting tips have in common is that they all use extensive statistical analysis to aid their predictions.

Over the past few years there has been a significant spike in the amount of sophisticated football stats freely available to the public. FBref is a great resource for finding all the facts and figures you need to know about the Premier League.

As well as all of the traditional metrics such as goals, clean sheets and possession, more advanced stats such as expected goals, pressures and goalkeeper save %, can now be tracked easily. Using these more complex numbers can really give you an edge when predicting how Premier League matches might turn out.

Football statistics can also be useful for tracking individual players' performance. For instance, if you are trying to select who might finish as the league’s top scorer, you should not just look at how many goals they scored. You should also check out their xG, goals per shot on target and shot conversion rate as well.

Do not forget to consult the PuntersPage’s profit and loss rankings before placing your bets. This is updated after each Premier League gameweek and it can give you some extra insight. Additionally, Kickform — our in depth stats centre — is also freely available for all of our readers to enjoy.

Best Premier League Betting Offers

Premier League betting is very popular, and many bookmakers tailor their promotions accordingly. Here are some of the EPL offers you can expect to see from sportsbooks all season long.

Free Bets

One of the most common Premier League betting sign up offers is a free bet bonus. After you complete your registration, many betting sites will reward you with some betting credit. In some cases, this will come with no strings attached. Generally speaking though, you will need to make a qualifying bet first.

Deposit Bonus

Another popular Premier League betting offer is a first deposit bonus. If a sportsbook is offering this promotion, your maiden payment will be eligible for a percentage boost. For example, if an operator is offering a 100% bonus and you deposit R$20, you will have R$40 to bet with in total. Always make sure to check out any wagering requirements before activating the offer.

Big Game Offer

As well as these sign up offers, high profile Premier League games will occasionally attract one-off special promotions. These usually come in the form of in-play free bets, although deposit boosts and enhanced odds are also fairly common. The only catch is that your bonus must be used on a specified market.

Popular Premier League Betting Markets

As it is the most watched football division on the planet, you will not be surprised to learn that bookmakers offer deep and varied Premier League betting markets.

To Win Outright

This market is simple. All you need to do is select which team will lift the Premier League trophy at the end of the season. Many Premier League bettors prefer to place their wager at the beginning of the term. Saying that, there is also value to be found once the title race is underway.

Best Premier League betting site for outright bets: bet365

Top Goalscorer

The race for the Premier League Golden Boot is always one of the most fascinating subplots of the season. Using statistical analysis, which takes things such as xG, shots per game and conversion rate into account, can be extremely useful in aiding your selection for this one.

Best Premier League betting site for top goalscorer: William Hill

To Be Relegated

The battle to beat the drop in the Premier League has hundreds of twists and turns over the course of the campaign. New signings, managerial changes and a team’s fixtures can all affect a relegation threatened teams chances, so pay close attention to all of this before placing this Premier League bet.

Best Premier League betting site for player of the year: Coral

Next Manager to Leave Post

Few professions have less job security than Premier League management. Clubs — particularly those at the bottom of the table — tend to be extremely impatient, with managers dropping like flies throughout the year. Knowing which sides have particularly trigger-happy owners is an important thing to know when wagering on this Premier League betting market.

Best Premier League betting site for next manager to leave: Paddy Power

To Win PFA Player of the Year

At the end of every season, the PFA Player of the Year is crowned. This can be a tricky premier league betting market to find value on, as there is normally a standout favourite. Because of this, it is best to place your wagers towards the beginning of the season if possible.

Best Premier League betting site for player of the year: Ladbrokes

Premier League Accumulators

By far the most popular market of all is Premier League accumulators. Every weekend, thousands of punters place these kinds of bets, which consists of loads of small wagers which multiply to create higher odds.

The advantages of Premier League accumulators is that they can win you some big money. On the flip side, it only takes one wrong result to bust your entire coupon. In a division as unpredictable as the EPL, this is not great news. Despite this, accumulators remain a hugely popular way for players to bet on the Premier League.

Premier League In-Play Betting

As well as all of the above pre-match markets, Premier League betting also includes great in-play options. Here are some of the best ways to live bet on EPL games.

Next Team to Score

With this Premier League bet, you are trying to predict which team will grab the next goal. Odds on this can be affected by several factors, including: the momentum of the game, whether one team has had a man sent off and much more. This is a great market if you are watching the game live, as it is much easier to keep track of all this than if you are just following the commentary.

Number of Corners

This market has gained popularity recently. Essentially, you are trying to predict if a team will get above or below a certain amount of corners. If you are feeling brave, there is also the option to bet on the exact number of corners a side has.

Next Goalscorer

This is one of the most popular in-play Premier League betting markets. Here, you are wagering on which team, or which player, will score the next goal in a game. Predicting the latter is much harder, but it will also come with far better odds. Don’t forget, you can always choose ‘no next goalscorer’, if that is the way you see things going.

Exact Scoreline

For this market, players are challenged to bet on what the exact scoreline will be. Again, statistics can be helpful for bets like these. For instance, if a team has a good record for scoring in the final 15 minutes, you must account for this in your decision making process.

Player to Be Carded

Tempers can often flare up in Premier League matches and yellow or red cards are common. If you notice that a certain player is looking particularly riled up, it could be worth wagering on him going into the referee’s notebook.

Premier League Betting – Live Streaming

If you were hoping that Premier League betting would allow you to stream your favorite games, we have some somber news for you.

Unfortunately, as Brasil broadcasting rights are solely held by Sky Sports, BT Sports, Amazon Prime and the BBC, no sportsbooks are permitted to stream EPL games.

Despite this, some football is permitted to be streamed live by Brasil sportsbooks. Top betting sites such as bet365, Betfred and Bwin all possess a range of soccer matches to enjoy. La Liga, Bundesliga and Serie A games can all be enjoyed on these platforms, somewhat making up for the lack of Premier League action.

Online Premier League Betting vs Betting in Shop

After decades of high street dominance, the rapid increase in smartphone technology now means the majority of Brasil punters do their betting online. Here is why it is so popular:

  1. Online only promotions – If you continue to place your wagers at a brick and mortar betting shop, you are missing out on the wonderful world of online-only promotions. From sign up offers, to free bets and everything in between, online sportsbooks are well known for rewarding their players regularly.
  2. Convenience – Another great advantage of online Premier League betting is its incredible convenience. Provided you possess a solid connection, you can place bets no matter where you are in the world.
  3. Cashout Cashout has revolutionised sportsbooks, offering players more control than ever over their betting. This feature is only available online.
  4. Usability – In a betting shop you can often be left in a queue and browsing through the various markets is far from intuitive. Most online betting sites, meanwhile, have  all-in-one mobile apps which are extremely easy to navigate.

3. bet365

bet365_Football

A popular option for Premier League bettors, bet365 remains at the very top of its game despite the rise of competitors.

It’s fundamentally perfect, with the bookmaker’s website and mobile app both wonderful. You’re guaranteed a pleasant and efficient experience every time you use one of bet365’s services.

The bookmaker doesn’t do anything special. Although, customers are regularly handed out 40 R$ free bets to use on any Premier League match of their choice over the weekend. Bet365’s odds are of the highest quality, and their live streaming service is part of a superb live experience for customers. Bets are easy to place in play, with their Bet Builder function a popular option for live Premier League betting.

Bet365’s ‘Early Payout Offer’ is a unique promotion that pays out your bet if your selected team goes two goals in front at any stage of the match. The final outcome is then rendered irrelevant. Premier League matches are, of course, included in this offer.

Premier League Structure

Running from around mid-August each year until mid-to-late May, the Premier League features 20 teams who all play each other twice over the season, once at home and once away for a total of 38 games. Teams are awarded 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a defeat.

All points are entered into a league table format and, at the end of the season, the team with the most points are crowned champions. At the other end of the table, the three teams with the least points are relegated into the second tier of English Football – the EFL Championship.

In the case of a team being level on points, whichever side possesses the best goal difference — calculated by subtracting goals conceded from goals scored — finishes higher. In the rare case that two teams are tied for points and goal difference, goals scored are used as a tiebreaker.

There are two transfer windows in the Premier League — one in summer and one in the month of January, where teams are able to buy and sell players to other clubs both in England and the rest of the world. Naturally, bookies will always have markets available for some transfer window premier league betting.

The top four highest finishing teams in each Premier League season will advance into the following season’s Champions League, while the three subsequent teams will move on to the Europa League. However, it is possible for the team that finishes seventh to lose their place. If the FA Cup, or League Cup winners are not already in Europe, then this place goes to them instead.

History of the Premier League

In early 1992, the FA Premier League was formed. At the time, English football was in disarray, with stadiums crumbling, hooliganism rampant and the on-field action lagging behind the rest of Europe.

By the following August, 22 clubs, who had each resigned from the Football League in May that year, kicked off the new Premier League season. At the time, the league was known internationally as The Premiership but was rebranded in 2007 to the Premier League. Today, it is known as the English Premier League or EPL.

The first Premier League match broadcasted live saw Nottingham Forest beat Liverpool, and the first Premier League goal was scored by Brian Deane of Sheffield United in a 2-1 win against Manchester United. In 1995, the number of teams competing in the Premier League was reduced to 20, which remains the same today.

Since the 2000s, the global profile of the Premier League has expanded rapidly. This has led to more lucrative television and sponsorship deals and the division is now one of the richest and best known on the planet.
